Garbage Collection On Snow Days and Holidays
Here's what you can expect regarding trash and recycling during snow. Brownstone Management follows Department of Sanitation guidelines.
  • Set out garbage after 5pm (4pm from October 1 to March 31) on the holiday for collection beginning the next day, which may occur earlier or later than normal collection.  Recyclables should not be put out until the next week. When there are back-to-back holidays (e.g. two Monday holidays in a row), recyclables will be collected after the second holiday.
  • During snow operations, residents may experience disruption in service. Please check the Department's recent holiday collection schedule press releases for up-to-date information (or call Brownstone Management 718.499.6030 x0).
  • When there are back-to-back holidays (e.g. two Monday holidays in a row), recyclables will typically be collected after the second holiday.
  • For information on when to place your refuse and recyclables out for collection, go to the Collection Schedule.

8 Tips to Save on Heat
  1. Keep that thermostat at 68°F. For every degree you lower your heat in the 60-degree to 70-degree range, you conserve 5% of your energy use. Snuggle up in a warm sweater instead of turning up the heat.
  2. Take advantage of the sun! Open your curtains during the day, and let the sun's energy warm up your house. Pull the curtains at night to help stop heat from escaping through the glass.
  3. Seal around your windows and doors. Check around window and door frames for cracks or leaks where cold air could be seeping in.
  4. Remove or at least seal window air conditioners.  Those expandable louvers on each side of air conditioners can allow lots of air through.
  5. Practice a little feng shui. Set up your rooms so that places where you sit and sleep are not near big windows or exterior walls, wherever possible. If your sofa, bed, or desk has to be near exterior walls or a big window, you might add a little warmth and flair with some heavy curtains over that window or a cheery wall-hanging.
  6. Move furniture that blocks heating elements.
  7. Invest in a programmable thermostat. According to the EnergyStar website, you can save as much as $180 per year on your energy bills, so these things pay for themselves pretty fast. By setting your heat at a lower temperature while you're away or sleeping, you'll see big energy savings without sacrificing comfort.
  8. Cover your floors. If you have tile or hardwood floors, you can keep things cozy by laying out an area rug, especially if you have a basement or crawlspace.
